This is what’s been happening so far. Since no one has really written anything down, the dating is generalized, as I truly have no idea when some of this hilarious nonsense took place (except in relative terms). Currently, it is Spring of 1156.
Isawa Hana — Misa
An Asako Inquisitor whose general temperament is almost stereotypically Isawa. However, she is much kinder than she initially appears. A half-kitsune adopted by the Phoenix Clan at an early age. Hana is a gifted air magician, and her talents with healing magic will shortly be sorely tested. Currently riding behind Miya Hirobu, hours behind Anjin and Hakujin.
Anjin Andoru — Drew
A Kakita duelist whose foreign blood is evident in not only his vassal family name, but in his appearance. Capable of extreme cockiness, but can back it up with his blade when necessary. Anjin is an honorable man who has saved a cursed woman both in her past and in her present. Experiments with a tanju (pistol) given to him by his distant father. Currently riding with Hakujin and a number of NPCs.
Matsu Hakujin — Eric
In every way, he is a Matsu — boisterous, big, and brutal in combat, with a pragmatic side that few have seen. Thoroughly enjoys music, to the point of obsession, and is completely at a loss as to the kitsune who has taken an amorous place in his life. Hakujin is the first to awaken his blade, Asshi-Ikkatsu. Currently riding with Hakujin and a number of NPCs.
Keisuke — Derek (secretly a Shosuro-trained Bayushi)
Keisuke is a capable warrior, adept in the use of each of the seventy-some-odd weapons he keeps on his person. A prestidigitator of some skill, and an actor whose real purpose in life, and whose Yogo blood, have yet to be discovered. Keisuke is mentoring under Bayushi Izanagi, and performs a number of duties for the Scorpion. Currently enjoying conversations with several incredibly interesting people, in a place both near to and so far away from Setsuna.
Togashi Setsuna — Kris
A Dragon Clan monk whose peculiarities are left out in the open. Easy-going, a little rambunctious, and eminently caring. She is something of a prodigy, but hides it behind an extroverted exterior. Setsuna has known little of love in her time living with the Tattooed Order. Currently chasing after a man who was poured into his armor.
An unabashedly open Scorpion bushi, whose natural talent for leadership and seduction have kept him at odds with clan superiors for many years. Speculation abounds as to whether or not he could usurp the Clan Champion’s power, so he is kept at arm’s length without being truly alienated. Deadly with a katana, which is currently lost (as is he); however, his true gift is his tongue. The baddest man in the land to ever hold a sword in his hand.
Originally an enemy of our intrepid adventurers, who now sits in a hazy position between friend and foe. He isn’t truly human anymore; through some arcane arts or divine measure, he is without the necessities for life to function, yet lives. Hiwa emanates evil, and has performed evil deeds in the past, but he isn’t without his (admittedly good) reasons. Muscular and wise, he could still be a terrible adversary for the party. For now, he is content to lead Setsuna and Keisuke, and any others that he can, to his side of the story.
Several Shinjo have proven themselves important to the party, and to the story. As our team of valiant and untrustworthy adventurers are currently in Unicorn Clan lands, at the extreme west of the empire, this shouldn’t be peculiar. However, the people certainly are. Shinjo Kazuo, leader of the normally peaceful Haru Mura, and his brother Tadakatsu form the upper echelon of Shinjo power in-town. Shinjo Ikomo, cavalry captain beneath Tadakatsu, is a powerful warrior who considers the defense of his town and his friends a birthright. All three are accomplished scouts and archers, and are as deadly on horseback as a Unicorn legend.
A muscular, heavily-scarred man renowned for his stoicism. He rarely shows emotion, except in regards to his beloved (and incredibly lovable) son Kai. Hasn’t yet been seen in combat, so his monk talents have yet to be showcased. Travels as a ronin, raising his son to be the best sort of person that he can be. His past is nebulous at best, and none are aware of his importance to the story, nor that of his son’s.
Without his dai tsuchi, Ryohongo is a powerhouse. With it, he’s a slaughterhouse. In a recent battle against yobanjin, he slew tens of barbarians by upward decapitation, sending heads outward in bloody arcs that terrified the enemy. Through his frightening actions and the solid tactics of Shinjo Ikomo and Matsu Hakujin, the small army was routed, only for them to discover two events of much greater severity.
A diplomat who cut his teeth traveling with Toturi the Black before his days as Emperor began. While young then, he has seen his age grow much quicker than he thought possible in the days he spent alongside the exiled Akodo. Kotogai is a gifted negotiator known for his impartiality and punctuality, and is not known to be particularly emotive. His nephew, Jiujan, travels with him, tending to simple chores while learning the courtier’s craft. Kotogai invited two members of the party to his home in NW Rokugan in return for saving his life in Ryoko Owari Toshi — the negotiations between the Crane and the Lion came under attack by apparent cultists, and the two warriors were instrumental in the defense against and subsequent capture of those who fled. He is currently missing, which is cause for great concern for Anjin and Hakujin. Jiujan is riding with Hakujin, who has been tasked with defending the boy by Shinjo Kazuo.
A Miya Herald whose duty it was to bring word to Horiuchi Kotogai of the negotiations’ successful resolution (and lack of any real substance). Now, he rides out to Exiles’ Pass with several party members and NPCs to defend the empire against a barbarian incursion. He wears an eye patch over a missing eye, and a pair of eyeglasses to correct the vision in his remaining eye, a necessary tool for someone whose primary skill is in archery. Hirobu bears the nickname “Ten Dozens” with pride, earned for the two full quivers he wears slung across his back at all times. Unfortunately, he can be forgetful of his possessions at times.
Young and talented, Michio is an engineer and architect of note. He and his colleague Agasha Shigeo are responsible for leading the construction of a castle and fortifications at Exiles’ Pass to prepare for attacks from barbarians. This has sparked a response from the yobanjin, whose reasons behind the assault have yet to be discovered. Michio always wears his wakizashi, but seems to have little use for it.
One of the Dragon Clan’s emissaries to the Unicorn Clan. Shigeo is a warrior of some skill, but is a greatly talented task master, and bears a strong work ethic that occasionally gets lost in sake with Kaiu Michio and Shinjo Tadakatsu. His specialty is defense, but this remains hidden behind his fiery temperament.
A supposedly Boar Clan shugenja whose death years ago should have meant his end. He has helped certain PCs, and given other PCs reason to pause and consider his intentions. Much like Hiwa, he appears to be a monk and shugenja, and both are capable and powerful in both aspects. They seem to be at odds with each other, but the reasons behind their conflict are still unknown.
